SHRM-CP exam guide
What to expect, what it costs, and how to register. Verified 2026-09-13.
Overview
- SHRM-CP EXAM — RESEARCH SUMMARY
- •Verified against SHRM primary sources on 2026-09-13 by the /deep-research workflow: fan-out web search, primary-source fetch, and 3-vote adversarial verification.
- •Every figure below appears on a page fetched from shrm.org or a federal agency; anything that failed verification was left out.
Exam Structure
- •The SHRM-CP exam contains 134 multiple-choice questions: 80 knowledge items and 54 situational-judgment items; 24 of the 134 are unscored field-test items, drawn from both knowledge and situational-judgment item types.
- •The 24 unscored field-test items are confirmed in the handbook: "Both exams also include 24 unscored field-test items."
- •Three multiple-choice item categories are used: SHRM Knowledge Items (HR functional-area content), Foundational Knowledge Items (key concepts from the nine behavioral competencies), and Situational Judgment Items (scenario-based).
- •In situational judgment items, all response options could be viable actions; the keyed answer is the most effective action as selected by a panel of SHRM-certified subject-matter experts.
- •The appointment is four hours (240 minutes) in length, including 3 hours 40 minutes (220 minutes) of testing time.
- •The 220 minutes of exam time are administered in two equal, independently timed halves of up to 110 minutes each; unused minutes in Section 1 do not carry over to Section 2.
- •Breakdown of seat time (handbook, revised January 2026): Confidentiality Reminder 2 minutes; Introduction and Tutorial 10 minutes; Exam Section 1 up to 110 minutes; Exam Section 2 up to 110 minutes; Survey 8 minutes.
- •There are no scheduled breaks; candidates may leave the testing room but the exam clock continues to run.
- •Exams are computer-based and delivered at authorized Prometric testing centers.
Knowledge Areas
- •The SHRM BASK includes nine behavioral competencies plus one technical competency, HR Expertise (also called HR Knowledge).
- •HR Expertise is grouped into three knowledge domains (People, Organization, Workplace) and 14 HR functional areas.
- •People domain functional areas: HR Strategy; Talent Acquisition; Employee Engagement & Retention; Learning & Development; Total Rewards.
- •Organization domain functional areas: Structure of the HR Function; Organizational Effectiveness & Development; Workforce Management; Employee & Labor Relations; Technology Management.
- •Workplace domain functional areas: Managing a Global Workforce; Risk Management; Corporate Social Responsibility; U.S. Employment Law & Regulations.
- •Approximately half of the items are allocated across the three behavioral competency clusters and half across the three HR knowledge domains; the distribution is identical for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.
- •Behavioral Competency Clusters (50% total): Leadership 19%; Business 17.5%; Interpersonal 13.5%. By item type: Situational Judgment 40%; Foundational Knowledge 10%.
- •HR Knowledge Domains (50% total, HR-Specific Knowledge items): People 19%; Organization 18%; Workplace 13%.
Scoring
- •Results are reported as scaled scores ranging from 120 to 200; all candidates who pass receive the maximum score of 200.
- •The passing score is set using the Modified Angoff method.
- •The same 120-200 scale, 200-for-pass rule, and Modified Angoff method appear unchanged in the 2025 handbook.
Eligibility
- •SHRM-CP candidates are not required to hold an HR title and do not need a degree or previous HR experience to apply.
- •A basic working knowledge of HR practices and principles, or a degree from an Academically Aligned program, is recommended; the SHRM-CP assesses HR competency at the operational level.
- •Students must be enrolled in an HR degree program to be eligible for student exam application pricing.
- •Students seeking the SHRM-SCP must meet the full SHRM-SCP criteria to apply.
Registration AND Cost
- •Exam fees, early-bird pricing, and retake/transfer fees are published in the current SHRM Certification Handbook and were not confirmed at the required verification threshold in this pass; see UNVERIFIED.
Testing Windows
- •Testing windows and application deadlines for 2026 and 2027 are published in the current SHRM Certification Handbook and were not confirmed at the required verification threshold in this pass; see UNVERIFIED.
Recertification
- •Credential holders must recertify every three years by earning 60 professional development credits (PDCs) per three-year cycle or by retaking the exam.
- •The handbook restates the requirement: earn 60 PDCs over a three-year period or retake the certification exam.
- •The recertification cycle begins the day the exam is passed and ends three years later on the last day of the holder's birth month; the retake option is available no earlier than 12 months before cycle end.
Recommended Resources
- •2026 SHRM Certification Handbook (official rules, composition chart, timing, scoring).
- •SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge PDF (full competency and functional-area definitions).
- •SHRM BASK overview page.
- •SHRM-CP credential page (exam-at-a-glance).
- •SHRM Certification FAQs.
- •SHRM Eligibility Criteria.
- •SHRM Recertification page.
- •SHRM article on knowledge vs. situational judgment item design.
- •SHRM 2025 Certification Handbook (prior edition, useful for year-over-year comparison).
Common Errors
- •Treating the 24 field-test items as additional to 134 (158 total): the 134 count already includes the 24 unscored items.
- •Treating the field-test items as all situational-judgment items: they are drawn from both knowledge and situational-judgment types.
- •Using the 2025 cluster/domain weights (Leadership 17%, Business 16.5%, Interpersonal 16.5%, People 18%, Organization 18%, Workplace 14%): the 2026 handbook publishes Leadership 19%, Business 17.5%, Interpersonal 13.5%, People 19%, Organization 18%, Workplace 13%.
- •Assuming a numeric passing scaled score is published: all passers receive 200 and the cut score is not disclosed as a number.
- •Assuming a scheduled break: none is scheduled and the clock keeps running if a candidate leaves.
