HR ROI earns its place as a bottom-line metric for one stated reason, and Strategic Alignment tells you what to do when HR's plan and the business's plan have drifted apart.
Why ROI is the bottom-line metric
SHRM's study guide states that HR ROI is a holistic measure of HR programs and services, while employee turnover costs, workplace ergonomic data and HR cost per trainee each focus on a single outcome and so do not address bottom-line issues.
The wrong reasons offered: that ROI is required by generally accepted accounting principles (the source makes no such claim), that it is easier to calculate than turnover cost, or that it alone can be benchmarked externally (the single-outcome metrics are benchmarked too).
When a skeptical operations leader says HR proposals never show what the company gets back, the keyed action is to present the program's ROI as a holistic measure alongside the single-outcome measures already tracked. ## Strategic Alignment
The sub-competency covers aligning HR strategy, communications, initiatives and operations with the organization's strategic direction. Business Acumen requires applying business tools and analyses so HR initiatives are consistent with that direction.
Two scenario patterns follow from this:
- The CFO names margin pressure and the HR plan lists only headcount requests and program launches. Rewrite the plan so each initiative is tied to the strategic direction and the named pressures. Presenting it unchanged leaves HR disconnected; delaying defers work you can do now with information already given; cutting the HR budget trims spending without aligning anything.
- A proposal written in HR terminology is declined without discussion. First, restate it in the organization's own business terms and show how it serves the strategic direction. Adding program design and vendor detail piles HR detail onto a proposal that failed for lack of business framing. Escalating to the board does not fix it. Shrinking the scope abandons alignment.
Carry this in: realign now with what leadership already told you. Do not defer, do not escalate, do not shrink.
