Service Excellence and Support

This unit is mostly situational judgment. The keyed answers turn on Consultation's definition: work with stakeholders to evaluate business challenges and build ongoing support for HR solutions that meet the changing needs of customers and the business.

How SJIs are keyed

SHRM states that on situational judgment items all response options could be viable actions, and the key is the most effective action as selected by a panel of SHRM-certified subject-matter experts.

So the key is not automatically the option that escalates to senior leadership, SJIs are not legal-compliance items where only one option is lawful, and speed is not the standard. Effectiveness is.

Service Excellence sustains credibility

Service Excellence is one of Consultation's five sub-competencies. When managers say HR responds slowly to routine questions and requests fall through the cracks, undermining HR's credibility on a reorganization, the keyed action is to improve the quality and responsiveness of everyday HR service so ongoing support for HR solutions is maintained. Pausing routine service sacrifices the customer relationship the competency requires. Routing questions through division heads adds a barrier between HR and its customers. Deferring to the annual review leaves a problem that is actively damaging the project.

Advise on what discovery found

Advising on HR Solutions requires HR to bring its own findings to the stakeholder rather than execute a predetermined answer. A director insists an applicant tracking system will fix slow hiring; discovery shows hiring managers take three weeks to review resumes. Present the discovery findings and recommend a solution aimed at the review delay HR identified. Buying the system because the director decided skips the recommendation stage discovery made possible. Declining to advise until an outside study is commissioned abdicates HR's own sub-competency.

Revisit when the need changes

Halfway through a rollout, the business need shifts and part of the solution no longer fits. Return to the stakeholders, re-evaluate the business challenge and adjust the solution. Completing a solution known not to fit, cancelling salvageable work, or continuing while withholding progress from the sponsor all fail the definition.

Carry this in: address the cause you verified, keep the stakeholder in the conversation, and fix service problems now.
