CSR Definition and Domain

CSR on this exam is a definition, and the definition is broader than any single practice people mistake it for.

The BASK definition

Corporate Social Responsibility is the organization's commitment to operate ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local and global community.

Learn the ending. It is where the distractors part company with the real definition.

What CSR is not

  • Not philanthropy. Allocating a fixed percentage of profit to nonprofits reduces an ongoing commitment to a giving program.
  • Not reporting. Disclosing nonfinancial metrics to investors and rating agencies is a practice, not the definition.
  • Not compliance. Keeping within environmental law is narrower than the commitment described.
  • Not shareholder primacy. Maximizing long-term shareholder returns is a goal the definition does not use.

Each of those is a real corporate activity. Each is only a part, and the exam rewards the whole.

Where CSR sits

CSR is one of the four Workplace-domain functional areas, alongside Managing a Global Workforce, Risk Management, and U.S. Employment Law & Regulations.

  • People holds HR Strategy, Talent Acquisition, Employee Engagement & Retention, Learning & Development and Total Rewards.
  • Organization holds Structure of the HR Function and related areas.
  • Leadership is a behavioral competency cluster, not a knowledge domain at all. If a question asks which knowledge domain, Leadership is never the answer.

Carry this in

When a manager asks how CSR differs from charitable giving, answer with the full definition: ethical operation, contribution to economic development, and improved quality of life for the workforce, their families and the community.
