This unit is situational judgment anchored in the Employee Engagement & Retention definition. Know how SHRM keys these items and the two reasoning moves the keys reward.
How situational judgment items are scored
The SHRM-CP includes 54 situational judgment items. Per SHRM, all response options could be viable actions, and the keyed answer is the most effective action as selected by a panel of SHRM-certified subject-matter experts.
- This is not a "three options are factually wrong" format; that is how knowledge items are built.
- The key is not the lowest-legal-risk option, and it is not the option candidates most often chose in field testing.
Because every option is plausible, you are ranking effectiveness, not spotting an error.
Performance expectations belong to this area
The BASK definition of Employee Engagement & Retention explicitly includes developing effective strategies to address appropriate performance expectations from employees at all levels. So when managers apply inconsistent standards across levels and employees say expectations are unclear, the most effective action is to develop those strategies here, not to hand the problem elsewhere.
- Referring it to Learning & Development for a manager training curriculum delegates the substantive work before the expectations themselves are defined.
- Moving standards into Total Rewards reassigns them to an area defined around pay and benefit design.
- Waiting for the next engagement survey delays action on a problem already evidenced by manager inconsistency and employee reports.
Segment, then diagnose, then act
Voluntary turnover in one location has risen for three quarters while the company-wide rate looks normal. The first move is to report turnover at that specific location and level, a BASK-named metric, and identify the causes, a BASK-named best practice, before choosing an intervention.
- Applying the company-wide program treats a problem the aggregate data hides.
- Freezing transfers out restricts movement without addressing cause and can worsen resignations.
- Moving pay to the 75th percentile commits spend on an unverified assumption.
Act on what you can verify now, and fix the cause rather than the symptom.
