Hofstede and GLOBE are tested against each other. The way to keep them apart is the count and the names that appear in only one model.
Hofstede: six dimensions
- Individualism — the extent to which people feel independent as opposed to interdependent members of larger wholes.
- Power Distance — the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions accept and expect that power is distributed unequally.
- Masculinity
- Uncertainty Avoidance — tolerance for ambiguity.
- Long-term Orientation — time horizon.
- Indulgence
Hofstede has six, not nine.
GLOBE: nine dimensions
Performance Orientation, Assertiveness, Future Orientation, Humane Orientation, Institutional Collectivism, In-Group Collectivism, Gender Egalitarianism, Power Distance and Uncertainty Avoidance.
The overlap that makes the trap work
Power Distance and Uncertainty Avoidance appear in both models. That is why they can never identify the framework on their own. The other seven GLOBE names do the identifying: Performance Orientation, Humane Orientation, Institutional Collectivism, In-Group Collectivism, Assertiveness, Future Orientation and Gender Egalitarianism are GLOBE only.
- In-Group Collectivism is the classic odd-one-out: it is GLOBE, while Masculinity, Indulgence and Uncertainty Avoidance are Hofstede.
- A question may pair the right framework with the wrong count. "GLOBE, six dimensions" is wrong twice over on the number. GLOBE is nine; six is Hofstede's count.

If the stem quotes acceptance and expectation of unequal power distribution, that is Hofstede's definition of Power Distance, not Uncertainty Avoidance and not Long-term Orientation.
