Self-determination theory explains why voluntary learning collapses. It is not about how much reward you attach — it is about which psychological needs the design satisfies.
The three basic needs
SDT holds that three universal basic psychological needs matter for all individuals:
- Competence
- Autonomy
- Relatedness
SDT research focuses on how far social environments allow those needs to be satisfied. Do not confuse this trio with other needs frameworks, and do not confuse it with expectancy theory's three components.
The continuum
SDT posits a continuum of self-determination:
- Amotivation, which wholly lacks self-determination
- Four types of extrinsic motivation: external, introjected, identified, integrated
- Intrinsic motivation
The point of the continuum is that extrinsic motivation is differentiated, not one lump. An answer saying extrinsic motivation is a single undifferentiated state is wrong, and so is one compressing the four types into two categories SDT does not use.
Within the four, external regulation is the most controlled and therefore the least self-determined. Order runs external, introjected, identified, integrated, with integrated the most self-determined of the extrinsic types. Introjected sits just above external, close enough to be the near-miss answer.
Designing for the needs
When learners say modules are assigned with no choice of topic or pace, they never learn whether they are improving, and they study alone, all three needs are unmet. The most effective action is to redesign the curriculum so learners choose paths, receive feedback on mastery, and learn in cohorts — choice serves autonomy, mastery feedback serves competence, cohorts serve relatedness.
- Adding completion bonuses or mandating completion adds external regulation, the most controlled and least self-determined type.
- Shortening the modules reduces burden without touching any of the three needs.
- Publishing a completion leaderboard introduces controlling comparison rather than supporting competence and relatedness.
Address all three needs in the design, not the reward attached to it.
