Technology Management is a BASK functional area with a two-part definition and a set of key-concept groupings. What is tested is placement: which definition, which grouping, which edition.
The definition has two halves
Technology Management is the use of existing, new and emerging technologies to support the HR function, and the development and implementation of policies and procedures governing the use of technologies in the workplace.
Anyone who says the area is limited to choosing and running HR systems has dropped the second half: the policies and procedures governing technology use. That is the correction the exam wants.
The distractors are real definitions from elsewhere:
- Structure of the HR Function: the people, processes and activities involved in the delivery of HR-related services.
- Workforce Management: HR practices that meet talent needs and close critical competency gaps.
- Employee & Labor Relations: any interactions between the organization and its employees regarding terms and conditions of employment.
Where it sits
Technology Management is one of the five functional areas in the Organization knowledge domain, alongside Structure of the HR Function, Organizational Effectiveness & Development, Workforce Management, and Employee & Labor Relations.
Not with Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards or Learning & Development, which are People-domain areas. Not with Risk Management, Corporate Social Responsibility or Managing a Global Workforce, which are Workplace-domain areas.
The groupings
- HR software and technology: ATS, HRIS, LMS, performance management system, big data analytics software, collaboration software, blockchain, AI, generative AI and machine learning.
- Electronic self-service: scheduling, time-keeping, contact information updates, benefits enrollment.
- Data and information management: data integrity, confidentiality, security, disclosure, backups, cloud-based software, cybersecurity, data retention.
- Social media management: internal social media platforms, social media policy, branding.
What 2026 added
The 2026 edition added generative AI, AI input and output bias awareness, and AI-related policies addressing utilization, transparency, fairness and data privacy. Blockchain, big data analytics software and collaboration software were already in the 2022/2025 edition. BYOD and offsite network access are technology-use policies, not 2026 additions.
