AI Policy and Social Media

Two 2026-relevant pieces close out Technology Management: AI governance and social media management. Both are policy instruments, and both questions reward writing the standard before the conduct rather than after.

AI policy plus bias awareness

The BASK pairs two things:

  • AI-related policies addressing utilization, transparency, fairness and data privacy, under standards and policies for technology use.
  • AI input and output bias awareness, under data and information management.

A recruiting tool that ranks applicants and is trained on the company's past hiring decisions is exactly the risk that pairing anticipates: biased inputs producing biased outputs. The effective action is to establish the AI policy covering utilization, transparency, fairness and data privacy, and review the tool's inputs and outputs for bias before use.

  • Approving the tool and reviewing results after a year defers governance through a year of live hiring decisions.
  • Limiting it to the final two candidates narrows scope but leaves biased ranking ungoverned.
  • Accepting the vendor's certification that the tool is unbiased substitutes a vendor assertion for the employer's own bias awareness and policy.

Social media management

The grouping is internal social media platforms, social media policy and branding. Three items, nothing else.

  • Cloud-based software, cybersecurity and backups are data and information management.
  • ATS, HRIS and LMS are HR software and technology.
  • Scheduling, time-keeping and contact information updates are electronic self-service.

The pairing of policy with branding is what the situational item turns on. When employees post about the company publicly, some helpfully and some with client details, the answer is a social media policy that addresses confidential information and aligns employee posting with the employer brand. Confidentiality is a named data and information management concern, so the policy covers both halves of the problem.

  • A blanket ban on posting forgoes the branding benefit the BASK explicitly recognizes.
  • Having marketing respond publicly to each problematic post reacts without preventing recurrence.
  • Monitoring employees' personal accounts surveils instead of setting a standard.

Carry this in: AI policy is utilization, transparency, fairness and data privacy, and social media management is platforms, policy and branding.
