Nontraditional staffing is a five-item list, and the exam separates the categories by what defines the engagement: the calendar, the task, the agreement, the purpose, or the location.
The five categories
Gig workers, remote workers, seasonal workers, contract workers, interns.
Distractor sets pull from elsewhere: business partners, shared services staff and centers of excellence staff are HR structural models; high-potential and high-performance employees and successors are workforce planning and succession planning categories; mediators, arbitrators, investigators and compliance officers are Employee & Labor Relations roles.
What distinguishes each
- Seasonal workers: predictable, recurring surges tied to a time of year. A tax firm tripling its workforce each January through April and returning to a small core team is seasonal.
- Gig workers: engaged task by task, typically through online platforms, paid per assignment. Discrete design tasks on a platform is gig.
- Contract workers: engagement defined by an agreement over a period, not by individual tasks.
- Interns: engaged primarily for developmental experience.
- Remote workers: defined by where work is performed, not by the pattern or duration of demand.
Remote trips people: it is a location category in a list otherwise about engagement type, so it is offered whenever a scenario mentions distance or platforms. Gig versus contract is the other close pair — per task versus per period.
The judgment pattern
Operations leaders want a 12-week project covered without permanent headcount, and they also want a pipeline of candidates for future openings.
Keyed first action: clarify the duration, supervision and skill requirements of the work before selecting among contract, gig, seasonal or intern staffing. The BASK treats these as distinct categories, so the requirements that distinguish them have to be known before one is chosen — especially when a second goal, the pipeline, may favor interns or contract workers over gig engagement.
Posting permanent requisitions creates permanent positions for temporary work. Engaging gig workers immediately picks a category before the distinguishing requirements are known. Cancelling the project abandons the business need rather than staffing it.
Carry this: define the work first, then match the category.
